A Guide to DIY Landscaping

If you fancy giving your garden a makeover, and have the time and the inclination to do it yourself, there’s a lot to consider. Design is everything, and with a paper layout that is to scale, you can plan where your features will be positioned, and once you have determined the scope of the project, calculate a budget for the project.

Free Online Resources

The Internet is always a great place to learn something new, and there will be a wealth of information (and videos) that will help you with every step of the project. You can search online for a company that supplies a 4-yard skip in Lewisham and have them deliver it when you’re ready to start.

The Right Tools

You will need a range of tools, which would include the following:

  • Spades, shovels and rakes
  • A wheelbarrow
  • Timber saw and hacksaw
  • Specific materials – Sand, cement, turf and topsoil.
  • Plants and fauna

You might need other things, depending on the design, but everything can be sourced online and delivered to your home when you need it.

The Groundwork

Regardless of design, there will be waste to be removed, and by hiring a skip from a local supplier, all your waste will be responsibly removed. If you are building a terrace or patio, then you will need to dig out at least 6 inches of soil (this can be used for something like a rockery) and install a ready-mixed concrete base.

If turf laying is involved, make that the very last thing you do, and prepare the ground well, removing stones and any other obstructions, while also levelling the ground.
