Knowing The Differences between Plastering and Rendering

by szahomen

Some of you might have come across the terms ‘plastering’ and ‘rendering’, and you might wonder what are the differences between them, since some people use these terms interchangeably?

  • Plastering
  • Rendering
  • Ensuring the work is done properly

Plastering

Plastering is done by mixing pre-packed gypsum powder (mostly white) with water, and then using a trowel to slather it over the walls or ceiling. It is mostly used indoors (as it is not water-resistant) and in the installation of the false ceiling. It dries quicker than cement and it should not be used in wet areas. There are companies offering affordable plastering services in Wolverhampton who can do up the interior of your house nicely for you.

Rendering

Rendering utilises cement and sand to cover the walls of a home, be it the interior or exterior. Its properties allow it to be used in wet areas without affecting its durability. As rendering requires a higher set of skills to master (compared to plastering), it is more expensive than plastering, due to the materials and skilled labour involved.

Ensuring the work is done properly

Both rendering and plastering must be done properly before painting the walls/ceiling. If not done properly, the paint might not adhere to it properly due to cracks, little bumps, and even undissolved cement/gypsum. The walls must be smooth and free of any defects, and exterior paint should only be used for the exterior of the house to increase the durability of the cement.

Hiring skilled labour to complete the job for you may not come cheap, as they would require years of experience in order to provide the best results for you. Therefore, avoid companies that are charging you too cheaply for their service. Always seek and compare quotations.
