My family didn’t have much money when I was growing up, but I managed to get lucky. They helped to put me through college, but I worked to pay for the bulk of it. It wasn’t easy, but I managed to do it. I worked really hard to get to where I am. That’s why it’s important for me to have my kids understand that they’re lucky to have everything they do. I want them to know that it’s important for them to give back, so every year during the holiday season we cook large meals, deliver them and serve them to those who need them the most.
I encourage them to volunteer more often than that, in nursing homes and animal shelters, really anywhere in need that they can find semi-locally, and they do, but this is the most labor-intensive volunteering that they do. They both help me prepare and cook large meals; typically casseroles and deliver them to homeless shelters where we help serve them also.
We make this happen by using our Cuisinart food processor. It’s such an amazing tool and it really gets the work done for us. One of our go-to meals is a pot pie, and we chop all the veggies and make all the pie crusts in the food processor. It does so much of the work and it saves us so much time.
My oldest child, my son who is 13, suggested that we get another work bowl so we can switch more seamlessly and lose less time. One of us would clean the dirty one while the other is attached for use. That was a proud father moment for me.
I visited the KitchenWorksUSA website where I was able to order the Cuisinart DLC-8 4-piece Tritan Bowl Kit Part. It arrived in a short amount of time and we were ready to rock for the holidays. Everyone was totally excited.
But my kids were so beyond excited to get started and to have things done more efficiently. We were right on schedule to get things done by the time we needed them. It was awesome. We were all ready to share what we had made and to make a difference for all these people who didn’t have much to look forward to.
My kids were so proud of themselves, and I truly was too. The people we served were so thankful, and the way their faces lit up was really priceless. To be totally honest, the pride from the children to have made something and served it to someone in need and watch how thankful they also are to receive it is just what it’s all about. There’s really nothing better than making someone’s day a little better. And my kids are learning the value of kindness and that’s an invaluable lesson that will never get old.
